The battle between R-22 & R-410A has been quiet but fierce. For Ozone layer protection concerns, R410A came out in 1996 and has slowly been taking market share over R-22 systems. R-410A is a non-ozone depleting refrigerant, but many consider R-22 to be the far superior refrigerant. The cut-off date for purchasing R-22 HVAC equipment was January 1, 2010. Any Air conditioning equipment purchased after January 1, 2010, will be R-410 or Puron® cooling systems. Governments around the world have used the Montreal Protocol in efforts to regulate & ban HCFC ozone-damaging R-22 refrigerants. The first major air conditioning manufacturer to introduce R-410A was the Carrier Corporation. Carrier is the pioneer when developing ozone-friendly refrigerants. It only seems like yesterday that R-410A just came out, but now Carrier has a new refrigerant replacing R-410A. The new refrigerant called by Carrier, identified as R-454B or Puron Advance™. Changing refrigerants has been a big adjustment for the HVAC industry. There has been many winners and losers in this transition from R-22 to R-410A. In the long run, we'll all be better without R-22.
